2024 Election Results

There are an estimated 31,926 ballots still not yet processed in Orange County. We reached out to Registrar of Voters to find out more about our lengthy election certification process and why it takes so darn long.

“State law prohibits me from certifying the results of this election before Tuesday, December 3, 2024,” explained Bob Page, Registrar of Voters for Orange County, via email. He referred to California State Assembly Bill 3184, which stipulates that “the elections official shall not certify the results of the November 5, 2024, presidential general election prior to the 28th calendar day following the election.”

As explained in the same bill, each vote-by-mail ballot must have a signature that matches the voter’s signature on file. As one of six states that process ballot signatures at the county level, California requires that voters receive notification by mail if their signatures do not match. Voters then have an opportunity to verify their signatures. With the vast majority of ballots either mailed or dropped off in ballot boxes, the reason behind our long wait for election certification becomes clearer.

While certification is still weeks away, the Registrar’s office has been busy addressing voters’ needs. “We assisted more than 33,000 voters who called our Voter Hotline this election,” Page noted. “After the election, we will review the calls to identify any major issues we need to address by making operational improvements.”

That post-election review will play a crucial role in shaping how future elections are managed. “After we certify the results of each election, our Registrar of Voters teams review our administration of the election and identify opportunities for operational improvements,” Page said. “We then as a team discuss which proposals to review further and/or implement before the next election. It would be premature for me to discuss what we might change before that evaluation is completed.”
