Boo! IPD Shares Tips for a Not So Scary Halloween
Halloween in Irvine is always a thrilling time filled with costumes, candy, and spooky surprises. But as the ghosts and goblins emerge, so does the need for safety. Shiree Lind, Community Outreach Specialist at the Irvine Police Department, shared essential tips to ensure Halloween remains a night of safe fun for all ages.
Before Halloween
Preparation is key to Halloween safety, starting with costumes. Irvine PD suggests picking bright or reflective costumes that help kids stand out in the dark. Masks may add mystery, but they often block vision or restrict breathing, so try to choose safer alternatives like face paint. Also, if you’re the homeowner expecting little visitors, inspect your yard for any hidden tripping hazards.
Mapping out a safe route is also crucial. Lind advises families stick to well-lit paths, steering clear of dark alleys or abandoned areas. A quick discussion on safety rules—such as staying with adults, not entering strangers' homes, and practicing stranger caution—can help kids stay mindful during their candy hunt.
Rehearsing “trick-or-treat” along with “thank you” gives growing kids confidence in conversing with adults. Also, those passing out candy never tire of seeing little ones with good manners.
During Halloween
Traveling in groups is encouraged, whether trick-or-treating with friends or family. Carry flashlights or glow sticks to improve visibility, both for trick-or-treaters and drivers. Following road rules, using sidewalks, and crossing only at marked crosswalks all go a long way in preventing accidents.
Don’t forget to inspect any treats before digging in! Parents should check candy for tampering or damage, as Lind reminds us.
Extra Tips for a Safe Halloween Night
Setting a curfew can provide peace of mind, especially for older kids out with friends. Carrying a phone and sharing your location with family ensures that everyone can stay in touch. And remember, avoid any homemade or non-commercially wrapped treats unless you trust the source.
Most importantly, Irvine PD encourages everyone to trust their instincts and be aware of their surroundings. If anything feels off, step away and seek help.
With these tips from the Irvine PD, you’re all set for a safe and memorable Halloween! Happy haunting, Irvine!
