All-Star Panel to Lead Supreme Court Term Review

UCI Law School, in conjunction with Ms. Magazine and TorkLaw, will host its 13th Annual Supreme Court Term In Review

On Friday, June 30th at 10 am, the public is invited to a lively discussion on the significance of the Supreme Court’s current term.

Sitting on the stage of the Irvine Barclay Theatre will be a distinguished panel including UCI Law Professor Mario Barnes, New York Times Columnist Jamelle Bouie, Vanderbilt Law School Professor Jessica Clarke, The Guardian Columnist Moira Donegan, and Slate Senior Writer Mark Joseph Stern. Michele Goodwin, nationally recognized constitutional law expert and UCI Chancellor’s Professor, will return as moderator for the second year in a row.

“It’s an outstanding panel,” said Goodwin over the phone. “They are each an expert in their own right.”

Goodwin will help the panelists to break down the Supreme Court’s decisions in what has proven to be another consequential year of jurisprudence.

“This was significant in terms of what was on the docket this term,” Goodwin said. “If not for the momentous Dobbs decision last year, this is a term that we would say is a blockbuster.”

Supreme Court rulings this term, including those on affirmative action, state legislatures and federal elections, race and voting maps, tribal rights, and environmental protection, will have far-reaching implications. Additional weighty rulings on gay rights, religious employee rights, and the Biden administration’s student loan forgiveness program are soon to be decided.

With the Court’s popularity at a historic low, Goodwin said she sensed a wide-spread need to understand the Court’s decisions.

“The most important thing is that people are informed to understand the facts of cases,” said Goodwin, “and to understand what they represent.”
